Pre-Screened Contractors
can ensure that you get what you are paying for. Have you ever had a bad experiance with a Contractor? Texas is a right to work state, which means almost anyone can be a contractor. All you need is a phone and maybe some business cards to become a contractor in DFW. Very few trades even require a lisence. That's why DFW Contractors Pre-Screens all the contractors listed on our site.
What everyone should know
While not all Contractors participate in the BBB (Better Business Bureu) due to the added cost of being a member, the BBB still keeps a reliability report on all Contractors they know of. If they haven't heard anything bad or negative about a Contractor this report may not even have them listed. That can be a good sign! Because the BBB only reports the misdealing's of Contractors, not being listed in the BBB's index simpley means that the Contractor hasn't been reported to the BBB for any kind of violation or misconduct, nor have they joined the BBB as a member. Membership in the BBB cost money that some contractors can't afford to pay.
Having your Project Planned Out
If you preplan your project before inviting Contractors to Bid on the work envolved, most misunderstanding's can be avoided. Misunderstanding the customers request and need's is the leading reason for argument. Generally Contractors don't set out with a plan to take advantage of anyone. Having said that if the Contractor does'nt understand the details of your project he/she may underbid the job and be unable to complete it as desired. Having a good project plan before getting bids can also help ensure that you are getting quotes for the same scope of work. Compareing Apples to Apples and not to Oranges. If you know what I mean?
Get More Than One Bid
Sometimes knowing that you have gotten the best deal makes all the difference. Having the knowledge of what more that one Contractor is going to charge you may be the difference in a few thousand dollars or only a few hundred. But knowing that you got the better deal is a great fealing. Be sure that each Contractor is giving you a bid forthe same exact work and material. Otherwise chooseing the lowest price may be the difference in Top Quality materials, and Substandard.
Building Codes and Permits
All contractors opperating in DFW have to comply with the City Codes, and Builing Permit requierments before starting your project. Some Cities require that the Contractor be registered before permits will be issued. Not All projects require Permits. Before hiring your Contractor it is a good practice to ask questions about the city Codes and requierments. A Contractor who is not informed or cannot answer simple questions or does not know the requirements imposed by the city may not be the best choice for your project.
You can get information about the codes, and requirements within each city by calling the Code Enforcement office, Building Permits office for your city or town.
Make Sure the Contractor is Insured for the work he is doing
General Liability Insurance is not a required prerequesit for Contractors. Most infact opperate under the Radar. Don't get caught by this situation. Ask to see the C of I (Certificate of Insurance). Make sure the Contractor listed is who is presenting it to you, and that it is current and valid. Also check to see if the coverages are for the work being preformed. This all can be done by contacting the Agent or the Underwriter listed on te C of I. If anything appears to be shady it probably is and you should investigate further.
To find out how a Contractor Rates in your community, visit either BBB Dallas or BBB Fort Worth
DFW-Contractors also has a Rating's and Reveiws page that allows you to rate your contractor. All negative reveiws are investigated and contractors found misconducting their business practices will be removed from our index. |
